Okay - so I got a new pump (and a couple of grommets). I decided against Audi's offer of a washer pump for an eye-watering £87.04 (that's trade rate - retail is £108.42😳), and bought a Febi one from eBay for £11.73 delivered 👍. I also got a pack of four grommets from Amazon for £6.79, delivered the next day. No wonder he has his own space programme... Part numbers: 1K5 955 651 pump 443 955 465 seal Being an Audi, the washer system requires you to dismantle the car completely to service it... 😆 First up, remove the front nearside wheel... Safety first - always use axle stands... 🧐 Pretty grubby in the wheel arch, bearing in mind that the car sees rain once in a blue moon... 🙂 You don't need to remove the wheel arch liner completely; just fold it back on itself to access. *Top Tip - put the steering at full right lock, which will give you great access when trying to remove the washer bottle. I note that I'm missing a few fasteners - I make a mental note to get some more (and instantly forget it🤦♂️)... My little electric screwdriver makes short work of the half dozen or so torx fasteners... I fold the wheel arch liner and push it behind the brake disc to keep it out of the way... That's the huge washer tank (to be fair, it's designed to cater for cars with headlamp washers as well as those - like mine - that don't, hence the volume). It's held in place by three 10mm bolts; the upper two were little more than finger-tight 😬 The third, most awkward to access (natch), was tight, though... 🤦♂️ This is the feeder reservoir, which is all you see under the bonnet. It's held in place by a bolt, shared with the power steering reservoir bracket, and an annoying 8mm flanged nut 🤨 just above the ABS pump... *Top Tips: 1. Remove the other bolt holding the power steering reservoir as well, to allow easier manoeuvring of the washer bottle. 2. Pull off the under-bonnet seal (arrowed) to allow you access to do this. The annoying 8mm shouldered nut... 🤨 Right - let's take this job into the kitchen... As might be expected, the bottles are covered in road grime - and also have a lot of detritus in the larger one (despite my always using the neck filter when filling the bottle under the bonnet) I have a selection of brushes ideal for cleaning out them, though... Pretty soon, they are looking a bit more presentable... This has been a filthy job - I wonder if my hands will ever be clean again... 😆 Right - back to the garage. These are the new parts, alongside a container of Gummi Pflege - recommended to me by a late, lamented Audi owner friend for lubricating and restoring rubber seals... Excellent stuff - I also have a tub of red rubber grease for when it runs out... Well, they look the same, which is a relief... 😆 There's a fluid level sensor in the reservoir as well, I clean it up, but it's working fine (and is very simple - if there is fluid covering the two contacts, it does nothing. If there isn't it triggers a 'low fluid' light on the multi-function display). I give all the seals and grommets a good coat of Gummi Pflege, fitting new ones where the pump fits, where the pipe from the upper reservoir plugs in, and in the upper reservoir where the other end of the pipe fits. I reconnect the old pump and briefly activate the washers, then switch pumps and try it again - I am pleased that the new pump is both quieter and that it's higher pitched in sound - seems the old one was suffering from age. I blow through the lines leading to the windscreen washer jets - which I can do, but - as might be expected - I can't match the strength of the pump. I fill the bottle back up and (critically 🤦♂️) test the washers with the bonnet still open - and they seem to work fine. I button everything back up, torque the wheel studs up, clear the work area and dry everything off (there was a lot of fluid 😆), then reverse the car onto the driveway and put the hood up. Time for the critical test... There is absolutely NO difference... 😬 I put the car back in the garage, wash up (I may take a shower in a bit) and take my dog for a walk. I'll think on what else it might be - the obvious suspects are the pipes running to the washer jets perhaps having a leak and losing pressure. What a waste of *b*l*o*o*d*y* time... 😆
